Founded by Sergio and Linnaea Mendoza of Sandy Utah, Salsitas Mendoza is quickly becoming a household name. During the 2008 Great Recession, Co-founder Sergio Mendoza found himself without work and in need of extra cash. Linnaea, a medical assistant at the time, turned to making salsas to gift friends and family for Christmas. The salsas were a hit! Before they knew it people were asking for more. Linnaea and Sergio signed up for a small outdoor market to see if people would buy their family’s salsas. They were pleased to see such strong community support. They sold out on the first day. Soon they were signing up for farmers markets across the valley.
Based in Centerville, UT our founder began making natural body care products from natural ingredients. This included soaps, lip balms, lotions, and deodorants. By doing this on a small scale, he learned what ingredients clean, moisturize, and/or exfoliate exceptionally well. We have formulated different combinations of fragrance oils and all-natural essential oils, to develop the best products. We keep our products as natural as possible, while still reaching the desired scent or flavor.
In 1986, I visited Baltimore, Maryland and was taken to dinner at the best Italian restaurant that I had ever experienced. Part of the dinner was a salad with their “House” blue cheese vinaigrette. It was so fantastic that I bought a bottle to take home. After about a month, I had used up half the bottle, and realized that I was not going back to Baltimore. So I spent one whole Saturday tasting, testing, and recreating the dressing. By the end of the day, I had mastered the formula!
That was the beginning of what my friends, neighbors, and family have called for years “Dave’s Famous” and most still do. Finally, in January of 2011, I started the process of taking it to market. It took until July to get the final sign off and here we are, selling our “Dave’s Famous” sauce. But this name was too close to Famous Dave’s Restaurant, I knew we had to change the name.
On August 8, 2008, I married my beautiful wife, Mary Sandino. On that day she became a grandma to my grandchildren, hence the name “Grandma Sandino’s Sicilian Sauce.”
Operating from Bountiful, UT. After 31 years of making chocolates and treats for family and friends, I put together a chocolate company that reflects my love and devotion to this fine edible art, and to the memory of Grandma Florence Prows.
In the later years of Grandma's life, my husband and I had the wonderful opportunity of living with, and caring for her. As each holiday season approached, I helped Grandma make her famous chocolate treats creating timeless memories and sweet traditions.
Family stories tell of one snowy morning during the Great Depression when Grandpa Prows—looking for work in a difficult economy—found a $5 bill under the windswept snow. After much consideration on how the newfound treasure should be spent, Grandma offered to take some of the money and purchase ingredients to make candy to sell. Miraculously, her confections helped the Prows family get through very difficult times.
In tribute to this great woman, I carry on the tradition of helping care for family and friends by creating handcrafted, high-quality confections, just as she would have done.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy making them.
